The Central government is planning to develop an ‘Eastern Grid’ with 5,000 km of navigable waterway to boost regional integration and development. Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal stated this at a summit in New Delhi
Several multi-modal opportunities are expected to be unlocked through an economic corridor of 3,500 km connecting the North-east India with the rest of India via Bangladesh. This will be based on the seamless connectivity provided by National Waterway-1(Ganga), NW-2 (Brahmaputra) and NW-16 (Barak)
The Minister further said that the waterway will further promote eastern India's trade within BBIN countries comprising Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal, as well as amplify trade potential with countries like Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore
the network integration is likely to bolster economic development, market access and employment generation in the North-east region
